Barack Obama has resigned his church membership amidst new controversy concerning politics and the pulpit at the Trinity United Church of Christ. Rev. Michael Pfleger, a visiting Catholic priest and long time Obama associate mocked Obama's Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in a raucous display of ridicule, alleging Clinton embraces "white entitlement" thinking when it comes to the presidency.

Pfleger, a Catholic priest at St. Sabina Roman Catholic Church on Chicago's Southwest side, as well as, a long time friend of Rev. Jeremiah Wright, has since issued an apology for his damaging political remarks that have ultimately forced Obama into leaving the church he and his family have been a part of for over 20 years.

Obama issued an official statement on Thursday stating that he is "deeply disappointed in Father Pfleger's divisive, backward-looking rhetoric, which doesn't reflect the country I see or the desire of people across America to come together in common cause".

The NY Times reported last week that, according to NetNames, the 2008 presidential election has “triggered an avalanche of cybersquatter activity”. According to the Times speculators have registered nearly 2,000 domain names related to presidential candidates as of last week. Those related to Hillary's candidacy made up over half of the registrations, followed by Obama with 635 McCain with 269.

Republicans, who have had a noticeably less than prolific web strategy by comparison, have significantly outplayed the democrats when it comes to domain name hustling. What exponentially raises the domain game stakes is the rich keyword booty that, perhaps, becomes even more valuable once the field is settled.

According to MSNBC, the RNC has a domain vault numbering over 50, most of which are democrat candidate related. According to them, as well, over 20 Obama domain names were purchased by them after his victory in Iowa.

Dalia Perez: Politician Under Fire for Striptease

Before winning a seat in Veracruz state's legislature in September, Dalia Perez worked as a local TV show host. Getting her big raves today, however, is an image of her in a striptease scene from the 2006 film Xalapeno Chiles, a film she co-starred in back in 2006. In the film she plays a stripper having an affair with a powerful politician. A clip from the film posted on YouTube this past week depicting Perez performing a pole-dance striptease in very revealing fashion. An image, apparently from the clip, was aired last Thursday during Mexico's top morning television news show.

Xalapeno Chile was never released, but it is a black market DVD best-seller, with sales of pirated copies flourishing. Notwithstanding, her political rivals, perhaps, with less impressive physical credentials, are making big hay over the leak. Perez and her supporters accuse detractors of a sinister gender bashing agenda ripe from within the male dominated political machine in Mexico.

Perez is no stranger to trouble from matters of the sexually controversial. During the course of her her recent political campaign Perez had to deflect criticism resulting from a role in a music video in which she played a teacher who was having an affair with an underage student. In spite of her detractors, the Veracruz voting public extended her the ultimate vote of confidence. In fact, several Mexican actresses have won election to Mexico's Senate despite saucy acting roles, including Silvia Pinal, Maria Rojo and Irma Serrano. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), formerly Zaire, is the site of the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Five million have died in seven years, more than any other conflict since the Second World War. The war, centered mainly in eastern Congo, has involved nine African nations and directly affected the lives of 50 million Congolese.

While there is now cautious optimism for peace after the “Goma agreement” was signed on 23 January 2008, the death toll continues to rise as infectious diseases and violence run rampant through communities cut off from the most basic of essentials and help.

Mortality studies estimate that over 1,000 people continue to die each day from conflict-related issues, including runaway disease, malnutrition and ongoing violence. The most dire political, civil and humanitarian issues that have laid siege to the DRC continue to plague the nation's populace including national army members and armed groups alike that engage in perpetrating atrocities against civilians.

Congo Rape Horror: Rape As an Instrument of War

Perhaps the most horrifying of all is the widespread use of rape as an instrument of war. The social and health complications presented by this unimaginable crisis have been devastating, with, more often than not, women bearing the children of the rapists and causing, at the very least, the social fabric of a nation already in the throes of the intolerable to be cruelly torn apart.

Despite the efforts of UNICEF, the UN and global partners attempting to seek an end to the ongoing conflicts, including MONUC, the world’s largest and most expensive peacekeeping operation, little has been accomplished to establish permanent solutions that would provide relief to a vastly suffering nation.

The DRC is made up of approximately 200 separate ethnic groups, all with distincly different language and interests, which, in itself, presents massive social, economic and political complexities, perhaps, beyond the pale of manageable.

The Silence of Despair and Death

Perhaps, the most unimaginable aspect of all is that, for the most part, the Congo War has been waged in silent despair; of plunder, violence, starvation, disease and death, with global attention in such tragic disproportion to the sheer magnitude of human suffering that has made life intolerable for so many millions.

Toxic Tiny Toys for Tots

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on Wednesday announced a children's toy recall of about 4.2 million Aqua Dots units several hours after published reports about the product recall in Australia. The announcement by the CPSC was a voluntary recall in cooperation with Toronto-based Spin Master, the North American Aqua Dots distributor, after the original manufacturer,Australia-based Moose Enterprises, recalled their version of Aqua Dots, which are known as Bindeez in Australia.

The Aqua Dots toys, which made Wal-Mart Stores elite list of top 12 Christmas toys, have been selling in US retail outlets since April. It is believed the company was first alerted to the danger after tests showed some batches of Aqua Dots were not made with a company approved formula.

According to the CPSC, the recalled toy is a craft kit which allows children to create various multi-dimensional designs using small colored beads. The beads fuse together when sprayed with water. The coating on the beads that causes the beads to stick to each other when water is added contains a chemical that can turn toxic. The recall applies to all models of Aqua Dots. The product is available in various different kits with accessories such as a drying fan, applicator pen, design templates for the beads, and spray bottle.

Date Rape Toys Pose Serious Threat

Scientists have determined that the beads contain a chemical that the human body metabolizes into the so-called "date rape" drug gamma hydroxy butyrate (GHP), which when eaten, can induce unconsciousness, seizures, drowsiness, coma and death.

The toys were supposed to use 1,5-pentanediol, a nontoxic compound found in glue, but instead contained the harmful 1,4-butanediol, which is widely used in cleaners and plastics. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1999 declared the chemical a Class I Health Hazard, meaning it can cause life-threatening harm.

Two U.S. children who swallowed Aqua Dot beads went into nonresponsive comas. A 20-month-old child swallowed several dozen beads, became dizzy and vomited several times before slipping into a comatose state for a period of time, was hospitalized, and has since fully recovered. A second child also vomited and slipped into a comatose state and was hospitalized five days.

Voted Australia's "Toy of the Year"

In Australia, three children have been hospitalized over the past 10 days after swallowing beads from Bindeez, previously earmarked Australia's "Toy of the Year" by the Australian toy industry.

The CPSC advised that consumers should take the toy away from their child, store it in a safe place and search for any beads that may have strayed from the craft kit.

CPSC spokeswoman Julie Vallese said that parents need to take this very seriously because the consequences to children who ingest these beads are potentially life threatening. Children who swallow the beads can become unconscious, have respiratory depression, or seizures from chemical on the beads.

Bindeez and Aqua Dots are reportedly made at the same factory, in Shenzhen in China's southern Guangdong province. Last week, the Chinese government announced an export ban on more than 700 toy factories in the Shenzhen region because of sub-standard products.

Massive Recalls for Chinese Made Toys

Other recalls were announced by the CPSC for 405,000 children's products made in China, most of them toy cars, because of dangerous levels of lead. The recall includes about 380,000 Pull-Back Action Toy Cars and 7,500 Dragster and Funny Car toys. Four of the recalled products were imported by Schylling Associates, including Duck Family Collectable Wind-Up Toys, Dizzy Ducks Music Box, "Robot 2000" collectable robots and Winnie-the-Pooh Spinning Tops. The company earlier recalled an additional 66,000 spinning tops in August.

Washington last week announced sanctions on over 20 Iranian companies, banks and individuals, hoping to increase pressure on Tehran to stop uranium enrichment and reprocessing and curb its "terrorist" agenda.

The banks affected are Bank Melli, Iran's largest bank, Bank Mellat and Bank Saderat. Several international banks have halted transactions with Iran. Some foreign banks have closed accounts held by Iranian firms.

Iran has been under various U.S. trade and other sanctions since after the 1979 Islamic revolution, when Washington severed ties with Tehran. Under U.S. pressure, Western banks have either cut all dealings with Iran or limited their activities there.

The United States imposed sanctions on Bank Mellat and other Iranian banks and bodies, including Iran's Revolutionary Guards, to counter what it said was Tehran's bid to build an atomic bomb and its support for terrorism. These new sanctions have resulted from Iran coninuing to spurn the US May 2006 offer to support a civil nuclear program in Iran under international supervision.

In her remarks, Rice stated, "We and our partners remain fully committed to a diplomatic solution with Iran. On our behalf, the EU's Javier Solana reaffirmed that offer to Iran this week. Unfortunately, the Iranian Government continues to spurn our offer of open negotiations, instead threatening peace and security by pursuing nuclear technologies that can lead to a nuclear weapon, building dangerous ballistic missiles, supporting Shia militants in Iraq and terrorists in Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon and the Palestinian territories and denying the existence of a fellow member of the United Nations -- threatening to wipe Israel off the map."

Rice also stated, "Many of the Iranian regimes' most destabilizing policies are carried out by two of its agencies: the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or the IRGC, and the Quds Force, an arm of the IRGC.

Because of the Revolutionary Guard's support for proliferation and because of the Quds Force support for terrorism, acting under U.S. law and consistent with our international obligations, the United States today is designating both of these groups.

We are similarly designating three Iranian state-owned banks: Bank Melli and Mellat, for their involvement in proliferation activities, and Bank Saderat as a terrorist financier. We are also designating several additional Iranian individuals and organizations."

Along with Rice, Treasury Secretary Paulson said, "We are designating Iran's Bank Melli, Bank Mellat, and Bank Saderat. These are three of Iran's largest banks. They all have facilitated Iran's proliferation activities for its support of terrorism.

We are also designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for proliferation activities and its Quds Force for providing material support to the Taliban and other terrorist organizations.

The IRGC is so deeply entrenched in Iran's economy and commercial enterprises, it is increasingly likely that if you are doing business with Iran, you are doing business with the IRGC.

We call on responsible banks and companies around the world to terminate any business with Bank Melli, Bank Mellat, Bank Saderat, and all companies and entities of the IRGC.

In dealing with Iran, it is nearly impossible to know one's customer and be assured that one is not unwittingly facilitating the regime's reckless behavior and conduct.

The recent warning by the Financial Action Task Force, the world's premier standard setting body for countering terrorism finance and money laundering, confirms the extraordinary risks that accompany those who do business with Iran."

Washington has also said Bank Mellat and its subsidiaries provide banking services in support of Iran's nuclear activities, including the country's Atomic Energy Organisation.

A *US GAO Report obtained by CBS News reveals widespread air travel abuse amongst various Federal Agencies, with Federal employees treating themselves to improperly taken premium class upgrades.

Of 53,000 premium class tickets purchased @ $230 million, two out of every three of upgrades broke federal rules costing taxpayers $146 million.

Cited, were abuses, such as a USDA Foreign Agricultural Service Executive, whose ten trips to Western Europe escalated from $9000 to upgrades totalling $62,000. Another Agriculture Department official broke the rules with a $7500 improperly upgraded fare from the $900 coach flight that was required.

Federal rules have been easily circumvented up until now because agencies were only required to track and record first class ticket purchases, not business class, where most of the abuses have occurred.

According to CBS, all that is about to change, with past offenders being culled from bank records and earmarked for possible paybacks of the funds.

Similar systematic Defense Department abuse was revealed in a 2003. Since then, allocations for premium class flights shrank from $60m to $23 million.

After the release of "Spider-Man 3," Activision is looking for another profitable release with the debut of "Shrek the Third." The video game is comprised of 20 levels involving both characters past and present including Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, Puss-in-Boots, Artie and Sleeping Beauty.

Throughout the game, players try to save Shrek's land of Far Far Away from the evil Prince Charming. Activision officials say in addition to the characters, the game also includes the film's "signature humor" and new storylines not found in the movie.

Developed by 7 Studios, Amaze Entertainment and Vicarious Visions and published by Activision, the game was released on May 14, 2007 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, Wii, PC, Nintendo DS, and Game Boy Advance. A PSP version will be released in early June.

Volvo's "Join the Hunt" Ad

The Volvo online highseas adventure hunt for a sunken treasure chest containing $50,000 in gold pieces and the keys to a new Volvo XC90 luxury SUV is on. Volvo has challenged registrants from 22 countries worldwide to join in and find it. The competition is a promotional partnership with Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End which opened in theatres on May 25 with record box office numbers.

The online hunt is the second in Volvo's partnership with Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise that began with last year's highly successful 2006 promotion limited to residents of the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Spain and Austria only.

The 2007 hunt began worldwide May 4, with registration open through yesterday, and will conclude with a global online 'head to head' June 2 between top performers representing each of the 22 participating countries.

Once registered online, participants set sail on a virtual high seas adventure and receive clues as they solve a series of challenging and funonline puzzles. On June 2, the first person from each of the 22 participating countriesto finish the online hunt will compete against one another in one final online challenge. To participate in the global head to head, players will be required to present an original pirate chart upon conclusion of The Hunt.

The first of those 22 individuals to solve the final puzzle will be named the winner and will receive a trip to the burial location to retrieve the chest filled with $50,000 in pirate's gold and a key to a newVolvo XC90 luxury SUV.

Countries participating in The Hunt include the United States, Canada, Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Kingdom.

Lindsay Lohan's career was again "curbed" after her car struck one. Lohan was tracked down and arrested at the hospital after cocaine was reportedly found in the car at the scene.

Lohan was arrested at the hospital for investigation of misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, then released when she was admitted for treatment. Police declined to say what her blood-alcohol level was, but said the case would be presented to the district attorney's office, where she could face additional charges. It appears that felony charges would be likely to follow.

With news of Lindsay Lohan's weekend DUI breaking, Svedka vodka has apparently pulled out of sponsoring Lohan's 21st birthday bash that was to be held this July in Las Vegas.

Lohan's latest movie, Georgia Rule, is in theaters now. Her other screen credits include Mean Girls, Bobby, A Prairie Home Companion and Freaky Friday.

No, they didn't see it coming. Stemming from an obscure 1971 law that bans fortune telling for profit, more than a dozen Philadelphia psychic visionaries, astrologers and tarot-card readers were shut down without a hint of what city inspectors, the police or the future had in store for them.

According to the ABC News Video Report, Psychics Shut Down in Philly, Philadelphia Police had originally suggested that there were possible ties between gypsy suspects and fortune telling locations in the city as part of an ongoing robbery investigation. A press conference originally scheduled to elaborate on the robbery aspect, however, was abruptly cancelled.

According to Deputy Commissioner of the city Department of Licenses and Inspections, Dominic E. Verdi, no arrests or fines were issued, but that would change if the locations attempted to reopen.

On the other side, statements made by the victims of the closings allege that only those of Romanian heritage were singled out, embroiling controversy to the moves made by L&I and police.

Police alerted Verdi's department of the law that makes fortunetelling "for gain or lucre" a third-degree misdemeanor, possibly stemming from their ongoing robbery investigation that had implicated psychic storefront operations.

Verdi confirmed inspectors have closed 16 shops and he expects more to be closed in the future.

In the past nine years, an estimated 320 children have died due to heatstroke after being trapped or intentionally left inside a vehicle. While the temperature outside may not be unbearably hot, the temperature inside a sealed car can reach levels between 45 to 50 degrees higher.

For the past 7 years, Safe Kids Worldwide and General Motors have been working together to study and promote awareness to this issue. Test results from GM and Safe Kids Worldwide indicate that the temperatures inside a car with the windows rolled up can increase by 19 to 20 degrees in just 10 minutes.

These quickly rising temperatures in tandem with study results revealing that a child’s core body temperature increases at rates three to five times faster than adults provide a deadly combination. This is why, leaving a child inside a car, even for a short period of time, may prove fatal.

Clemens had limited his field to the Yankees, Astros and Boston Red Sox, his original team. But when Clemens' agent, Randy Hendricks, spoke to the Astros and Red Sox of late, they said they'd prefer he join up with them at the end of June or early July.

The Yankees, according to Hendricks, said: "We'd like you yesterday."

Perchlorate, a chemical used in rocket fuel, is turning up in the nation's food -- in vegetables like lettuce and spinach -- and water supply.

You've never heard of it? Most Americans haven't, but millions have been exposed to it. This week Congress held hearings to determine just how dangerous it is to humans' health.

"A study from the Centers for Disease Control last year tested almost 3,000 people who are representative of the U.S. population. They found perchlorate in every single person," said Dr. Anila Jacob of the Environmental Working Group.

So how did something used to launch inter-continental missiles and the space shuttle find its way into our homes?

At a hearing of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce this week, a government report was made public for the first time revealing that at sites in more than 25 states, perchlorate had leaked into the drinking water and soil. About 65 percent of that contamination was attributed to the Department of Defense and to NASA.

The Pentagon said it has invested "over $114 million in research related to perchlorate toxicity," and that they are "developing substitute chemicals."

According to a 26 page transcript released this week by U.S. military officials, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed confessed to being the mastermind behind the September 11, 2001, attacks. Speaking through a military representative, Mohammed stated, "I was responsible for the 9/11 operation, from A to Z,".

Other statements delivered by him during a March 2007 U.S. military tribunal included taking credit for the brainstorming and planning of 31 major terrorist plots and operations worldwide. The laundry list includes the 1993 and 2001 World Trade Center attacks, a thwarted 1995 plot to blow up as many as 12 U.S. commercial airliners, the October 2002 Bali, Indonesia nightclub bombing, a 1995 plot to assassinate Pope John Paul II, as well as, schemes to assassinate former Presidents' Carter and Clinton, to name a few.

Perhaps the most grim of all, perhaps, was his claim that he personally beheaded Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in 2002. "I decapitated with my blessed right hand the head of the American Jew, Daniel Pearl, in the city of Karachi, Pakistan", he was recorded as saying, according to the transcript. "For those who would like to confirm, there are pictures of me on the Internet holding his head."

Mohammed's meteoric rise in the al Qaeda ranks began in Afghanistan, soon after he graduated from from North Carolina A&T University where he earned a degree in engineering. He purportedly hooked up with al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden in 1996, whom he stoically compares to patriot and freedom fighter George Washington, as was reported in the ABC News video.

Call it World 2.0 or 3.0, whichever you prefer. One thing is clear. A new consumer-driven (user-driven) Age has arrived. When consumers (aka users) talk, companies, both big and small are beginning to listen in a big way. The California milk producers featured in the ABC News Video above are a ripe example. Milk consumers said, "stop using the darn hormone (rSBT-hormone)", and California milk producers listened. Who would come between a mother and her milk? Really.

The thing is, traditional approaches to branding, marketing, advertising and public relations that have been the elite cornerstone of corporate presence since the industrial revolution began have run aground and most everyone connected to the process is running for cover.

In a Fox 2 interview with Artest, he bares his true thoughts and feeling about the infamous Palace Brawl that he initiated. The episode cost him over $5 million in salary as a result of the hefty NBA suspension that also cost his team and teammates the loss of his services for the remainder of the season.

Despite his previous claims of remorse regarding the world reknown incident, in the interview he incredulously echoes remarks ("Like I told the kids") he had earlier made to the children present that day, specifically, that his role in the incident was not at all a mistake on his part, but, rather, him finishing what someone else started. During his presentation to the kids he basically advises them to model their behavior after his survivalist skills.

Guns, murder, drugs, entourages, public violence, domestic violence? When is enough, enough?

The NBA and NFL, especially, need to take a long hard look at their policies regarding behavior codes and the accountability of negligence.

"We're going to fix this medical crisis in this country. There is no reason why young men like your grandson will die because this is the wealthiest country in the world, and we got plenty of money to take care of every person in this country and keep them healthy. We just have to have some leadership to do it!"

With all the talk about the uninsured in America and health insurance reform it seems that Medicaid and the less fortunate continue to be the soulless victims. The states eye mandatory health care like the legislation passed in Massachusetts, which, by the way cut dental care from its Medicaid menu (see "Toothless Reform"), while other states narrow the Medicaid window so much so that it's near impossible to qualify for the minimalized coverage available (like Tennessee).

One thing you can bet on, health care providers haven't felt the squeeze. The system insulates network providers while kicking John Q. to the curb. Of course, we do have the Deficit Reduction Act which makes a feeble attempt at adjusting for the ravages of the administration's poor fiscal management strategies at the expense of Medicaid and America's general health.

No one really cares to address the billions of dollars having to be spent nationwide on the health and education needs of those illegally pouring across our borders. According to a recent article in Suffolk Life, it costs New York state taxpayers (aided by a 1982 US Supreme Court ruling that prohibits school districts from "barring access to a student on the basis of legal status or alleged legal status) an incredulous $4.3 billion dollars per year to educate the children of those with illegal or dubious status. Imagine what the health care tab is.

Candidate Clark seems ot think "some" leadership in Washington is needed. That statement somehow doesn't have a JFKesque ring to it. With major policy overhauls beckoning on every front, guts and steel to face the issues head on with daredevil skill and resolve are knocking at the election door.

Yes Michael Arrington of Tech Crunch fame believes the BBC should go - his principle argument being that by launching a new CBBC service in the public sector we have stifled 3 or 4 start ups. John Q: Health Care in America Still on the Critical List

When John Q (Denzel Washington) discovers health insurance will not cover the organ transplant that will save his son's life, he is willing to take the most extreme measures, including taking his own life, in order to save him.

John Q asked an soul shaking question and not strictly rhetorical in nature; tremors and terrors in the night not unfamiliar to most parents. Although the film and its message went unheralded and was ignored by Hollywood and Washington, Denzel Washington's courageous performance and choice of subject matter did not.

Unfortunately and somewhat understandably, dialog about health insurance and health care policy is not something that most Americans delight engaging in. Who relishes in discussing bills or financial pressures socially; a free pass given to lawmakers that is fully exploited.

Massachusetts Health Insurance Reform

Fitch Ratings recently reviewed the landmark legislation passed in Massachusetts aimed at providing a means for the state's 550,000 uninsured residents to obtain health insurance. While Fitch views the legislation positively, the impact on Massachusetts' hospital ratings is likely to be neutral.

The Health Reform bill, signed by Gov. Romney, will provide substantial additional financial support for hospitals and a shared responsibility among businesses and individuals with the goal of having 95% of state residents covered in three years. While many details regarding the implementation of the bill remain unclear at this time, there are several provisions that should result in additional funds for Massachusetts hospitals over the near term.

Fitch views the additional Medicaid funding ($100 million in 2006, $90 million in 2007, $180 million in 2008, and $270 million in 2009) as being favorable to hospitals, as reimbursement should increase. Under the bill, approximately 90,000 residents will be newly enrolled in MassHealth (the state's Medicaid program), including 40,000 residents that are currently eligible but not enrolled. While a portion of the improved funding is due to increased eligibility, reimbursement rates are also likely to improve. This should have positive effects on both revenue and bad debt expense.

The Commonwealth Care Health Insurance Program, a program designed to offer private, affordable, no-deductible health plans to approximately 215,000 state residents over the next three years, could also have a significant impact on reducing the levels of uninsured in the state. Slated to begin on Oct. 1, 2006, the program will provide those residents below 300% of the federal poverty level with state-assisted or -subsidized premiums.

In addition to the expanded Medicaid eligibility and the Commonwealth Care Health Insurance Program, there will be employer and individual mandates. The employer mandate requires those with 11 or more workers, who do not provide health insurance, to pay an annual assessment of $295 per employee. The individual mandate requires all individuals to have health insurance. However, while the details of the penalties on individuals failing to have health insurance are concrete, the definition of an 'affordable plan' has not been determined. The implementation of the penalties on individuals could be delayed until the 'affordability' issue is resolved. The successful implementation of the individual mandate and employer mandate should significantly increase the number of insured.

The Massachusetts Health Reform Bill is groundbreaking and should be favorable to hospitals in the state if fully implemented and properly funded. However, the total number of uninsured in the state, reportedly about 550,000, is relatively small. Although the uncompensated care pool is scheduled to remain in effect through 2008, it is expected to be replaced by a safety net program administered by the Office of Medicaid that will provide a minimum level of reimbursement for uncompensated care (reportedly $287 million, which is a reduction from the 2006 and 2007 funding levels of approximately $606 million and $620 million, respectively). Fitch believes that if fully implemented, the Health Reform Bill will be more favorable to Massachusetts hospitals than the uncompensated care pool.

Many details remain to be worked out, but an early read on the bill points to encouraging signs for Massachusetts hospitals. Non-profit providers in Massachusetts were heavily involved in the drafting of this legislation. While Fitch views the legislation positively, it is not likely to be the platform for national health care reform.
