MTV Arabia Launch: Engaging the Isolated Worlds of Arab Youth

An exclusive, star-studded preview event with performances by Akon, Ludacris, Karl Wolf, and local hip hop group Desert Heat launched MTV Arabia, the region’s first Arabic free-to-air youth entertainment and lifestyle channel to a viewing audience of
over 190 million people across the Middle East.

According to Variety, programming will feature a 60:40 split of Arabic and international music videos and lifestyle shows, including the flagship MTV Arabia show, Hip HopNa, an engaging platform for emerging Arabic hip hop talent. The network is available via satellites Nilesat and Arabsat and is targeted to tap into the massive popularity of international hip hop culture across the Middle East.

MTV Arabia has offices in Dubai and Cairo, with locations to be opened in Beirut and Amman in the near future and will air new,locally-produced shows featuring alternative Arab music like homegrown hip hop not usually found on existing Arab music channels such as Rotana and Melody.

U.A.E. based multi-media company AMG (Arab Media Group), with a stable of 8 radio stations and three daily newspapers has been spearheading the local drive of the Arabian MTV launch, including radio spots in Lebanon, one of the Arab world's most vibrant cultural scenes, calling for local hip hop artists to send in their demos.

With mobile phone penetration at 104% throughout the region, MTV Arabia can prove to be a viral income producer, as well as, a potent cultural platform engaging the isolated worlds of Arab youth.

The Silent Congo War: With over 1,000 people continuing to die each day from conflict-related causes, five million have perished in seven years, more than any other conflict since WWII. Perhaps the most unimaginable aspect of all is the widespread use of genocidal rape as an instrument of war by both sides of the conflict.
